Derailment or Seemingly Crazy Train of Thought: surreal art-print, poster, book, desktop-wallpaper NeoSurrealismArt.com
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train! - Ozzy. Derailment as we know it is dynamic effects of vehicle that runs off its track, however in psychiatry, derailment is a disorder of thought categorized by discourse consisting of a sequence of unrelated ideas. In a mild manifestation, it is characterized by slippage of train of thought ideas further and further from the point of origin. In some studies on creativity, while it describes a similarly free association of ideas, it is not considered as a mental disorder or the assurance of one. It is often used as a synonym for vivid and imaginative thinking. For example, the chess knight’s move is extremely unusual or one might say “crazy” among chess pieces. The move is not straight forward like others; nonetheless it gets excellent strategic results. When it comes to creativity, one’s concern is typically how one could be further creative, or how to come up with more inventive ideas. Creative individuals tend to re-conceptualize the problem more often than their less imaginative counterparts. That means, instead of thinking of a cut-and-dry end goal of the project, they sit back and examine the problem in different and alternated ways.
”Mental wounds not healing; who and what's to blame; I'm going off the rails on a crazy train; All aboard!” Osbourne, Crazy Train, Blizzard of Ozz 1981. The term "train of thoughts" comes originally from 16th century in Leviathan of Thomas Hobbes; Of the Consequence or Train of Imagination - “By Consequence, or train of thoughts, I understand that succession of one thought to another to distinguish it from discourse in words, mental discourse. When a man thinks, his next thought after is not altogether so casual as it seems to be. Not every thought to every thought succeeds indifferently.” Artistic derailment is the title and the underlying leitmotif of this image. The spiral labyrinth of creativity is seemingly dark and mysterious; one might effortlessly go down stairs to abyss or climb up to the sun. The labyrinth galleries have many secrets, alternatives, and traps, and the choice is individually yours. The most recognizable of all time Renaissance sculpture of David is the honour to the artistic feat of all generations. Incidentally, this marble statue has been a revolutionary breakthrough of its art time; no artist before Michelangelo portrayed David as not a hero, but a simple boy and had omitted the giant Goliath altogether. His gleaming eyes are watching us from the layers of rust and scratches of the 15th century. And the crazy train, of course, the driving force that rides like a thunderstorm through all obstacles and barriers.
So, if one finds oneself derailed by stagnating creatively, try to re-conceptualize the idea by focusing on a more distant, irrational or crazy angle. Abstaining from a task is useful for breaking through a creative block; it also seems that making psychological distance may be useful for the train of thought as well. Study confirms that daydreaming can help with the artistic thought process. Embrace absurdity! The mind is always seeking to make sense of the things that it sees, and surreal art as well as abstract art put the mind into the override mode for some time while it tries to work out just exactly what it is looking at. Therefore, experiencing visually something absurd or surreal can help boosting one’s pattern recognition and lift creative thinking. Creativity increased when both positive and negative emotions are running high. I would not want one to put in a bad mood or depression for an inspirational drive, but surprisingly it works for me. One is usually much better off when one derails or turns off the work mode and absorbs more inspiration in the form of reading, watching, or just observing. Extensive problems benefited most from a counter-factual mind-set: thinking about what could have been, what if, and why not!
