Freudian writings and thoughts were major influences on the development of the surrealism movement, particularly on Andre Breton, the leading theorist, and Salvador Dalí. Sigmund Freud was the first to identify a deep layer of the human mind which stores memories and most basic instincts and called it “the unconscious”. The goal of surrealism was to reveal the unconscious and reconcile it with rational life: as envisioned by Andre Breton, surrealists would discard the conscious element of art and rely on the unconscious for inspiration instead. At the heart of surrealism lay the belief that knowledge of true reality can be obtained only through insights into the subconscious and these insights can only be achieved by certain a-logical automatic procedures (hence automatic writing and drawing which was adopted by many surrealists).

Freud assumed that humans repress their real desires and drives to the extent that they are consequently pushed into the unconscious of our minds. But they will be inevitably revealed by means of our dreams, mythological thinking, “Freudian slips”, and, of course, art. “The Interpretation of Dreams” by Sigmund Freud, one of the central works by a famous psychiatrist, was a key contribution to the surrealistic outlook. In order to get access to the subconscious, the surrealists started off on a search for new radical art forms and techniques. The suppressed unconsciousness has become an artistic sanctuary, far from social expectations and civilized behavioral patterns. That was the only way a true creator could retain their sanity and freedom.
