In Twilight Zone Infiltration the animalistic type objects are transformed into military components in a mind-boggling environment: the sub-aquatic world of the image teems with submarine mines acting like Christmas decorations on a fir tree. The somewhat hostile environment is entirely deprived of any hostility; the mysterious yet serene vibe is further substantiated by foreground jellyfish lanterns and a background castle. Time stands still here, our subconsciousness, only the lurking shadows of the unknown are mowing seamlessly around this mysterious territory. An element of photography is incorporated into this work in a very subtle, barely perceivable way.

With its message of stripping conventional objects of their habitual functions, Twilight Zone Infiltration is very similar to surrealistic visual movement paintings of the 30s. Those were the times of stylistic evolution marked by the desire of the artists to insert ordinary objects into unpredictable contexts thus provoking an unusually emotional and intellectual response from their viewers.

An example of such avant-garde work would be La Voix des airs (Voice of Space) by René Magritte, where we can see three meticulously shaped bells floating in the air over a peaceful realistic rural landscape. This tendency carries on in Yves Tanguy’s Palais Promontoire (Promontory Palace), one of the several paintings grouped under the name of les coulées (flowing forms) because of their molten character. Artists felt compelled to reach deeper into the human psyche; they practiced a combination of abstract and clear-cut forms; usual things in unusual surroundings acquired liquid shapes (a method particularly characteristic of Dalí’s works, e.g. The Persistence of Memory).
