What are the general criteria for art? The word “art” derived from the Greek word “techne” which meant “craft, skill, technique” and therefore originally suggested a very strong dexterous component to art. Aristotle, on the other hand, underlined a significant cognitive aspect of art by defining it as an “ability to execute something with apt comprehension”. Music, as well as poetry, has not always been considered an art per se, mainly because of its inspirational and somewhat irrational nature. It was not until recently that Western thinkers have agreed upon standard groupings of the arts. However, this perceived division of arts – between prophets and artisans – still remains. A poet and a performer are viewed more as irrational, inspirational creators, and we can appreciate the aesthetic value of their work by primarily employing the left hemisphere of our brain. Painters and architects, on the other hand, have to utilize a more visible and rational set of rules, and consequently are considered craftsmen.
A requiem or a requiem mass is either a vocal or an instrumental piece of music performed during a Catholic Church service in memory of the deceased. This musical experience is marked by the passionate mixture of grief and hope, emotion and rationale, body and mind. Requiems can make you soar up in the sky and sink deep into the ocean – that is an approximate range of their expressive means. This particular piece will help your soul rise above the shoreline of restless overtones and higher, to an arched dome of a cathedral, right into the heart of an ever welcoming sanctuary. If there is an end point to a journey, let it be just like that: through a magic sound of a grand piano into an inviting seclusion. They say sky is the limit. Well, at least now this limit has a quite visible outline.
Some of the most notable requiems include the following:
- Mozart's Requiem in D minor (Mozart died before its completion)
- Cherubini's Requiem in C minor
- Berlioz's Grande Messe des Morts
- Verdi's Requiem
- Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, based on passages from Luther's Bible
- Penderecki's Polish Requiem
